Nippon Paper Industries Co., Ltd. (President: Masatomo Nakamura) has successfully established a fundamental technology that effectively utilizes the ash that results from fuel combustion in a paper sludge boiler, and has developed a unique material that can be used to improve the soil of agricultural land such as marshy farm and to build base courses for roads.
"Paper sludge" is a general term for the fiber scum that is produced in the process of manufacturing paper. Heat can be collected as biomass energy when paper sludge is burned with a boiler. The resulting ash is already used as a raw material in cement. Nippon Paper Industries advanced the development of a technology that enables more effective use of paper sludge ash as a resource.
When ash generated from boiler combustion is used, the material is essentially required to have sufficiently established environmental safety. A highly reliable, environmentally-friendly material can be produced by adding the secondary treatment studied by Nippon Paper Industries to the conventional granulation treatment. This novel material is characterized by its light weight and porosity. (The Company has applied for a patent for the manufacturing technology.)
As part of the performance test of this novel material, the Kushiro Mill in Kushiro City of Hokkaido Prefecture will pave a road in the mill on Thursday, July 7. Nippon Paper Industries will check the performance as a material for a base course, such as frost protection, in cooperation with KAJIMAROAD CO., LTD.
Nippon Paper Industries will operate its business in an environmentally sustainable way to enable the Company to contribute to the continued development of society and the community.
