On October 1, 2003, the Nippon Unipac Holding Group will be introducing a structure
to encourage corporate social responsibility (CSR) in management, with an aim
of becoming a world leading enterprise.
For this purpose, we will be setting up a new CSR Committee. Chaired by Koshiro
Kitaoka as a CSR Director, who is currently Executive Vice-President, the Committee
will supervise our entire Group. A CSR Office will be established in Nippon Unipac
Holding as a Committee secretariat and a Compliance Office will be set up in Nippon
Paper Industries Co., Ltd., a core member of the Group.
Primarily at the initiative of Nippon Paper Industries, our Group has introduced
an Environmental Charter that emphasizes compatibility with the environment. We
have also been proactive in working on the industry's first Zero Discharge Campaign,
designed to eliminate waste materials, as well as promoting overseas afforestation
and introducing environmental accounting. Our achievements have been annually
disclosed in our Environmental Reports. In addition, we have set up codes of conduct
to enhance compliance.
Today's public is paying increasing attention to corporate activities. Every
enterprise should endeavor not only to perform well financially and to minimize
its burden on the environment, but also to fulfill a comprehensive set of social
responsibilities that encompass morality, fairness, transparency, disclosure and
risk management capabilities.
With the launch of our new structure, the entire Group will work as one to
respond to these social demands by achieving social environmental management that
effectively balances the three aspects of economic prosperity, environment and
social justice. We will also be committed to sustainable development as an enterprise
that broadly supports the industry and the culture, especially through our paper
and paperboard business.

Our Group has set four criteria that we believe must be met in order to be a world
