On May 29, a special art appreciation
gathering for the physically challenged was held at the exhibition of Masterpieces
of the Museo del Prado at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. On this day, approximately
700 physically challenged people and their attendants visited the museum.
From the Nippon Paper Group, 23 employees participated as volunteers, working
as receptionists, guiding visitors around the site and providing assistance at
the elevators.
A booth providing a demonstration of WAVY WAVY®, which
had been very popular in the previous special art appreciation gathering for
the exhibition of Works from the Pushkin Museum of Art held last November, was
set up again with the cooperation of the Product Development Dept., Nippon Paper
Industries Co., Ltd. Many physically challenged people who were first-time visitors
also dropped in, and tried to make three-dimensional objects from the two exhibited
works, namely Holy Children with a Shell by Bartolome Esteban Murillo,
and Bodegon: Plums, Figs, Bread, Keg and Pitcher by Luis Melendez.
Concerning the activities, one of the employees who participated as a volunteer
commented, "I felt happy when the person I was assisting was pleased. The
same thing applies to everyday living, so I felt that I was helped and encouraged
by them because I became able to think that there is something that I can do
to help others," Another volunteer said, "I was happy to see the delighted
face of a visually impaired person who touched three-dimensional pictures printed
on WAVY WAVY® and felt the outline of the pictures."
On this occasion, the employees of Nippon Paper Industries also had the opportunity
to act as guides with the members of Able Art Japan to attend to the physically
challenged people and introduce the exhibited works to them.
