On March 12, Nippon Paper Group invited physically challenged guests to the
Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum for the Collections from Musée d'Orsay. Blessed
with fine weather, nearly 850 guests and their attendants visited the museum.
The special invitation program for physically challenged guests is run by the
Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. Nippon Paper Group's voluntary involvement in
the program has continued for more than one year since the exhibition of the
State Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in 2005.
This time, 19 staff members from our Group participated. It was the first time
for many of them to take part in the program. At first, the new volunteers seemed
to be somewhat overwhelmed by the large number of visitors.
Looking after the physically challenged guests, the volunteers worked very hard
in fulfilling their roles, such as working as receptionists and guiding visitors
around elevators.
Two of the volunteers, Yasuko Suzuki from Nippon Paper and Michitaka Kubota from
Nippon Daishowa Paperboard, joined the staff of Able Art Japan in providing explanations
about the exhibits to the guests.
According to one of the volunteers, helping the guests get on and off the elevator
and guiding them through the Museum provided excellent opportunities to understand
the feelings of physically challenged persons to some degree, and to learn the
importance of helping each other. Another volunteer said the invitation program
led them to realize, at least to some degree, what would cause worries or troubles
for physically challenged persons in their everyday life.
To encourage voluntary involvement of its staff members, Nippon Paper Group will
continue to support the invitation program held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art
Museum.
