Recycle Plaza Shiyukan opened in Asahikawa
Mill on October 20 (Recycling Day), 1999. Shiyukan was built in the hope that
more people would understand how paper is being recycled, and the need to promote
recycling.
The Shiyukan building itself is an example of recycling. A former clinic of the
Mill has found a new use.
To promote community awareness about recycling, Shiyukan has collected wastepaper
from schools, in a joint effort with the Asahikawa City government. Shiyukan staff
have provided instruction on how to classify wastepaper, so that collected wastepaper
can be reused to make recycled paper. Shiyukan is also collecting used wooden
chopsticks.
Shiyukan has also accepted wastepaper from local residents, such as newspaper and milk
cartons. Visitors can try recycling milk cartons into postcards, an experience
that many visitors have enjoyed every day.
