The 47th Fujiwara Award Ceremony |
The Fujiwara Foundation of Science was established
in 1959 by Ginjiro Fujiwara, who headed the former Oji Paper before World War
II. (Oji Paper was the predecessor of today's Nippon Paper Industries Co., Ltd.
and Oji Paper Co., Ltd.) To establish the Foundation, Mr. Fujiwara contributed
100 million yen from his own funds.
Considered the Nobel Prize of Japan, the Fujiwara Award uses its funds
to recognize Japanese scientists who have made outstanding contributions. Every
year, the Award is bestowed on two scientists, and each winner is given a 10 million
yen honorarium.
The widely revered Mr. Fujiwara is renowned for his contribution to science and
technology and to promoting academia in Japan. The Fujiwara Institute of Technology,
which he had earlier founded on his own in the pre-war period, was later donated
to Keio University and now stands as that university's Faculty of Science and
Technology.
