The Third Nippon Paper Industries Cup Elementary School Soft Baseball Tournament
was held at Iwakuni Mill of Nippon Paper Industries Co., Ltd. in July. The tournament
has been held since 2003 as part of the Company's social contribution activities.
About 230 players from 12 elementary schools participated this year, from areas
that have been expanded to include Iwakuni, Kuga and Yanai.
The energy of the children must have driven away the rain that had persisted prior
to the tournament, and an exciting competition was held under a blue sky for two
days.
The final was fought between last year's champion Hirata Soft Baseball Team, and
the Iwakuni-higashi Unesco Team, which has been runner up for two consecutive
years. In the final match, Hirata caught the earlier leader Iwakuni-higashi, which
had opened the scoring with two runs. But Iwakuni-higashi managed to score an
additional run and ultimately won the deep red championship pennant as the champion
of the third tournament.
