School of Friendship for Forests and Paper is the Nippon
Paper Group's natural environment workshop that uses approximately 90000 hectares
of domestic forests owned by Nippon Paper Industries. Participants in the recent
workshop stayed in the forest of Toyono in Kumamoto for two days on March 3 and
4. This is the first session of the program to take place in Kyushu.
Seven families chosen from public applications gathered from several different
parts of Kyushu, including Kumamoto, Fukuoka and Kita-Kyushu.
Based on the workshop held at the Company-owned Suganuma Forest (the Marunuma
Kogen highlands) in 2006, the Toyono School was blessed with the excellent climate
of Kyushu, the characteristics of the company-owned forest in Toyono, excellent
access to Nippon Paper Industries Yatsushiro Mill and many other advantages.
Amid warmth reminiscent of early summer, the participants walked variation-rich
paths in the Company-owned forest. Along the way, they planted cherry trees.
The participants then worked on one of the favorite features of the workshop,
making paper from twigs. After that they visited Yatsushiro Mill and saw the
paper-making process with large machinery. They enjoyed learning much about paper
and forest over the two days.
The School enjoyed the cooperation of the Kumamoto Prefectural Nature Education
Facility for Children in Toyono and ASAP, a Kyushu-based organization to support
children's experience in learning. Staff members of Nippon Paper Group guided
the participants in hiking and paper making. The next workshop will be held in
Marunuma Kogen, Gunma in June.
