Policy in the Charter on the Environment |
Nippon Paper
Industries Environmental Action Plan |
| 1. |
Act to counter global warming |
· Reduce carbon dioxide emissions
from fossil fuels by 10% from their fiscal 1990 levels on a per-product basis
by fiscal 2010
· Reduce fossil fuel consumption by 13% from its fiscal 1990 level on a per-product
basis by fiscal 2010
· Reduce greenhouse gas emissions
· Manage company-owned forests in Japan based on sound practice designed to ensure
carbon dioxide absorption and sequestration
· Reduce energy consumption associated with distribution by optimizing logistics
through strategies such as reducing redundant-goods transport, increasing direct
deliveries to users, and encouraging modal shifts to rail and sea transport |
| 2. |
Protect and develop forest resources |
· Proceed with the Tree Farm
Initiative, an overseas afforestation project that fosters sustainable sources
of hardwood chips, to achieve an overseas afforestation area of 200,000 hectares
by 2015
· Acquire forest certification for all company-owned forests by 2008
· Increase the proportion of material from certified or afforested forests to
100% of imported hardwood chips by 2008
· Develop advanced technologies for boosting lumber cultivation |
3. |
Increase use of recycled resources |
· Increase the wastepaper
usage rate to at least 40% by fiscal 2008
· Increase de-inked pulp content of newsprint to at least 75%
· Reduce final waste disposal to muximum 4% of fiscal 1990 levels by fiscal 2010
· Increase the ratio of products made from waste to at least 30% of total waste
generated, by fiscal 2010
· Achieve a minimum collection rate of 80% for transport pallets by fiscal 2010
· Reduce office waste by 10% of its fiscal 2006 level by fiscal 2010 |
4. |
Comply with environmental statutes and work to minimize our environmental impact |
· Maintain and strengthen
the environmental management systems
· Define goals on a mill-by-mill basis for preventing air, water, and soil pollution;
noise; vibration; and foul odors
· Control chemical substances appropriately by identifying substances whose use
is to be prohibited or emissions, reduced
· Accelerate the shift to transport modes, containers, and packing materials with
low environmental impacts
· Move ahead with green procurement of office equipment, supplies, and other needs
· At overseas operations, set targets stricter than local environmental standards
and work to reduce their environmental loads |
| 5. |
Develop environmentally friendly technologies and products
|
· Step
up the research and development of environmentally safe, resource-saving paper
products, such as low-density printing paper and high-quality newsprint
· Conduct research and development of technologies for reducing environmental
impact at all stages of manufacturing
· Continue to install and improve resource-saving equipment |
6. |
Engage in active environmental communication |
· Disclose
environmental information to stakeholders in a timely manner through sustainability
reports and on the website
· Engage actively in local environmental communication through dialogue with the
public and the government
