Abstract:
Coefficient of friction of paper is increasing due to the trend of high loading of calcium carbonate filler and less carry over of extractives not using ground wood pulp in Japan. In order to achieve the desirable printing performance in offset printing without wrinkles or snaking, coefficient of friction of paper must be controlled for each printing press. Traditionally, calcium stearate or polyethylene wax based coefficient of friction agents have been used to reduce the coefficient of friction in pigment coating, which is alkaline pH buffered by calcium carbonate pigment. However, these coefficient of friction agents causes the gum-up problem used in the starch based clear coating because of low pH and high shear.
