Established in 1920, the Kushiro Mill has achieved
prominence as the production hub of newsprint for the Nippon Paper Group. The
Mill is situated in a fully natural environment at the mouth of the Shin-Kushiro
River, the source of which is Kussharo Lake, and is adjacent to Kushiro Swamp
National Park, which is frequented by Japanese red-crested whiteV cranes (Tancho). With
technology dedicated to the efficient production of newsprint, the Mill has a
long history of active involvement with environmental issues. The Kushiro Mill
uses high levels of de-inked pulp in the production process, and is also the
first Japanese mill to introduce a pulp bleaching method that requires no chlorine. The
Kushiro Mill has also been an active member of the community in Kushiro, home
of the popular ice hockey team, the Nippon Paper Cranes.
