Pulp-cho, Asahikawa, Hokkaido

The Asahikawa Mill, conveniently located in the
center of Hokkaido Island, was built in 1938. While making the best of its location
for the transport of wood and wood chips from all points on the Island, the Mill
utilizes its close proximity to the Ishikari River for the intake of pure water
necessary for papermaking. The Mill produces a wide range of paper goods, including
coated paper, woodfree paper, communication paper, specialty paper, kraft paper
and paperboard. Presented in 1989 with Japans prestigious PM Award for its
factory-wide excellence in TPM (total productive maintenance) activities for the
first time in the paper and pulp industries, the Mill is proud of the efficient
production made possible by the active participation of its employees. Surrounded
by the dynamic scenery of Mt. Daisetsu and Furano, the Asahikawa Mill practices
environmentally conscious production. Its adjoining showroom, named Shiyukan (meaning
play with paper), is also an educational center that illustrates the
value and methods of waste paper recycling. Visitors include representatives of
the industry and members of the local community.
